Hoya EnRoute Pro
It is no secret that we are big fans of Hoya’s lens offerings. From their Miyosmart lenses for children to their MyStyle 3 progressives, they truly offer a spectacle lens for every wearer. Hoya is continuously innovating and releasing new lenses to suit the visual demands of modern life. Working in an optometry office allows us to try these new releases for ourselves so that we can share our experiences with patients and help them choose the best lenses for their needs.
An exciting new option from Hoya is their EnRoute Pro lens, designed for use while driving. The lens claims to help minimize distracting glare and enhance contrast while driving under low light conditions. Now, I was a little skeptical about these claims as many other lenses have promised similar things with little success. Driving at night is becoming increasingly more challenging due to the introduction of bright LED headlights, often making it hard to focus on the road. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how much of a difference the EnRoute Pro lenses made on a recent late night drive to the airport. There was significantly less glare from oncoming headlights, making it easier to concentrate on the road. The lenses also made things feel clearer in night time conditions, thanks to a contrast-enhancing filter. While the headlights were still bright, the EnRoute Pro lenses made it more comfortable and less distracting. I was able to focus on driving safely instead of focusing on squinting through the glare. The EnRoute Pro lenses do have a slight greenish tint to them, though it is not any more noticeable than the residual tint a transition lens has, making it an excellent primary option for those that do a lot of night driving. It would also make an excellent option for those that only really wear their glasses for driving, as it provides both the needed clarity and added benefit of glare reduction.
As the days continue to grow shorter and darkness descends earlier, whether we like it or not we will all be doing a little more night driving. I am excited that we now have a spectacle lens option that I can confidently recommend to patients to make their driving experience more pleasant.
